Kenneth MacMillan’s timeless classic ROMEO AND JULIET at the London O2 Arena in June 2011

The Royal Ballet is thrilled to announce that it will perform Kenneth MacMillan’s timeless classic Romeo and Juliet at The O2 in June 2011. This will be the first time the world-renowned ballet company has performed in a UK arena and promises to be a ballet spectacle to remember.

A stellar cast of Royal Ballet dancers including Carlos Acosta, Tamara Rojo, Mara Galeazzi, Edward Watson, Alina Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg will dance the roles of the famous star-crossed lovers for four shows, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the Royal Ballet Music Director, Barry Wordsworth.

The Royal Ballet, usually based at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden, will move lock, stock and barrel into the arena for these special performances. Bringing you even closer to the action, the performances will feature a filmed introduction to each Act, on giant, live-relay screens, as well as the virtuoso performances from one of finest ballet companies in the world.

Prokofiev’s exhilarating and memorable score played by the Orchestra of English National Ballet is the very heartbeat of this tragic tale of love and destiny. Rudolf Nureyev’s award-winning production of Romeo and Juliet was especially created for English National Ballet in 1977 to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. The Company has since performed it worldwide to critical acclaim.

Romeo and Juliet – Stratford Upon Avon at Courtyard Theatre

In the instant of a chance meeting two young people fall in love. Impulsively they marry in secret, but in a divided city their innocent union is threatened by a bloody family feud. Shakespeare vividly captures the beauty, intimacy and ultimate fragility of young love in a hostile world.

Rupert Goold returns to the Company to direct his first production as an Associate Director following his acclaimed 2006 production of The Tempest. Rupert’s recent credits include Oliver! and Enron. Sam Troughton and Mariah Gale play Romeo and Juliet.
