Chance to Win a Limited Edition Charles Avery Print with Own Art and Time Out

Fancy owning an original work of art by an internationally recognised contemporary artist? Looking for an exciting new piece to start or add to your collection? Then today might be your lucky day!

Charles Avery was commissioned by Arts Council England to produce a special print to be won in this new competition, being run by Time Out to celebrate five years of the Arts Council’s Own Art scheme.

Moira Sinclair, Executive Director of Arts Council England, London said:
‘Own Art continues to help people across the country to kick start their own personal art collections in an affordable way. You may be thinking about starting your own personal collection, or perhaps you want to add to an existing one – either way this is a great piece of art that would be a fine addition to any collection. So log on and enter, and the best of luck to everyone!’

Avery is famous for captivating audiences with his ongoing and epic piece – The Islanders, where he has spent over 10 years describing the topology and cosmology of an imaginary island.

The artist’s work was recently seen in one of the most influential exhibitions of the year – Tate Britain’s fourth Triennial, Altermodern, which displayed the very best in new and contemporary work by British and international artists.

From 23 June 2009, avid Avery followers keen to snap up the next installment of his epic Islanders project will be able to do so at The Hayward Gallery’s summer exhibition, Walking in My Mind. The exhibition will feature the ‘mindscapes’ of ten artists, where more explorations of Avery’s island life will be on show.

Working across a range of media, the artist’s work is characterised by formal beauty, humour and a spirit of philosophical enquiry. Notes of inspiration come from William Blake, PG Woodehouse, Jorge Luis Borges, Joseph Beuys and Joseph Kosuth, revealing themselves on closer inspection with particular pieces.
