The Fantasticks has posted notices of an early closure of 26 June 2010 after a short run.
The musical opened on 9 June 2010 at the Duchess Theatre following previews from 24 May 2010. It was originally booking to 4 September 2010, however, the musical received poor notices from the popular press.
The book, lyrics and music are by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt. It is directed and choreographed by Amon Miyamoto, designed by Rumi Matsui, lighting by Rick Fisher, and costumes by Nicky Shaw. The cast includes Lorna Want , Luke Brady, David Burt , Clive Rowe, Edward Petherbridge, Paul Hunter, Hadley Fraser, and Carl Au. The show is produced by Gorgeous Entertainment / John Gore and Thomas B. McGrath / Nimax Theatres.
It’s loosely based on the play The Romancers (Les Romanesques) by Edmond Rostand and tells a story about two neighboring fathers who put up a wall between their houses to ensure that their children fall in love because they know children always do what their parents forbid. The children do fall in love but they discover their fathers’ plot so each goes off separately to experience the world. Finally they return to each other and the love they had, having learned from the world how to recognize their true feelings.
The Fantasticks first played in New York nearly 50 years ago and has since become the longest running show of any kind in the United States and the longest running musical in the world. It has played in over 2000 cities and towns in the US and it has been staged in 67 countries internationally.
