The live satellite broadcast of Les Miserables, The 25th Anniversary Concert from The O2 to almost 200 cinemas across the UK and Europe on Sunday night (3 October 2010) has been dubbed a major success by UK cinema chains and alternative content producer & distributor, Omniverse Vision. The event is believed to be the best-attended live cinema event ever in the UK.
With multiple sell-out venues across Britain, the show was broadcast on extra screens due to popular demand at regional cinemas and the average occupancy of screens around the UK was 90%.
Grant Calton, Omniverse Vision director: “We are delighted to be working with Cameron Mackintosh on such an important concert and to deliver such a spectacular success to cinemas with our debut live event. We anticipate similar success around the world with further screenings of the concert as advance demand has been outstanding“
Over 180 cinemas screened the concert live across UK, Ireland, Denmark, Norway and Germany with ticket sales for the live cinema events across Europe selling more than 34,000 admissions. A total cinema audience of over 36,000 meant that the combined audience for Sunday’s event totalled over 68,000 joining in the celebrations as the spectacular show was performed in front of a capacity crowd at the O2 Arena, London.
Cameron Mackintosh: “Sunday night was an extraordinary experience for everyone at The O2, so it is thrilling to hear that the response in the cinema’s was just as emotional, with audiences crying, cheering and standing, just as if they were at the live event. Great theatrical events can now have an even greater worldwide audience”
Canada provided the next stop for the cinema broadcast where it rolled out across the country on Monday (4 October 2010) before travelling to Australia on 21 October for screenings nationwide – full details of screens and ticket information is available at Omniverse Vision’s www.cinestage.net.
